In 1857, Miles Lewis, a farmer and part time minister, was appointed to serve the River Falls area Methodists under the guidance of the presiding Elder, Chauncy Hobart. Rev. Lewis immediately began organizing a class with 7 members, at the home of William Tozer at the corner of Main and Pine Sts. 160 years of Methodism in River Falls! The United Methodist Church is the oldest church in River Falls. The cornerstone of the current church was laid on Aug. 17, 1897. On Nov. 29, 1897 a fire at the Normal School led to the church being used the rest of the academic year until the building known now as South Hall was completed. The first church service in the new building was held Dec. 25, 1897. Methodist services resumed in the old church building (on Elm Street) until August of 1898, then were held at Ezekiel Lutheran Church for the month of September 1898. Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated on Oct. 4, 1898 and the total cost was $6,400.
